5 Mobile Apps That Are Changing Endurance Events & Sports

Mobile internet usage is growing rapidly. In fact, it is predicted to surpass desktop internet usage in 2014. That means that for the first time ever, more users will use a mobile device to access the web than a PC. And that’s not all. Check out these industry stats:

  • Mobile internet users will reach 113.9 million in 2012, up 17.1% from 97.3 million in 2011 (Source: HubSpot)
  • In 2012, 94% of smartphones users will be mobile internet users (Source: HubSpot)
  • In the U.S., 25% of internet users are mobile only (Source: Digital Buzz Blog)
  • Mobile searches have quadrupled in the last year. For many items, 1 in 7 searches is sent from a mobile device (Source: Digital Buzz Blog)

Here at Active, we see how important mobile access is becoming to everyday life. We’re developing mobile technology that will draw people out of their homes or offices and put them on your race course, while making it easier for you event directors to manage operations and people. Our goal is to make the world a more active place and going mobile is a natural extension of our mission. Here’s what we mean:

Active.com Mobile Stats

Mobile is transforming our business in 2012—of the 4+ million visits on Active.com each month, 24% of those are mobile visits. We have more and more users visiting us using their mobile devices.

Mobile is also changing the way people train….

Mobile for Training & Preparation

Our Couch –to-5k® app is one of the top downloaded apps. It is a “personal trainer in your pocket,” including personalities like drill instructor Sergeant Block who shouts at you as a motivator. The app lays out a simple plan, tracks workouts, and shares progress and results with friends. Active’s Couch-to-5k app has been downloaded by over 200,000 participants, has driven 3,000 5k registrations, and logged 700,000 completed workouts. We’re also very proud that it won the App of Year for Sports and Fitness at the 2012 Appy Awards.

New on the market is our 5k-to-10k app! This continues the training experience of our Couch-to-5k users and is expected to be just as successful.

Mobile for Race Day

We recognize that many of our clients allow race day registration, which can be on a mountain, by a lake or in city streets. The Active.com On-Site app allows participants to securely register or check in (if already registered) via mobile device. Bibs and waivers are taken care of, data entry is eliminated, and long lines are shortened. It’s an event director’s best friend on race day. Active.com On-Site has been downloaded 300 times and processed $16,000 in on-site registrations.

In addition to these endurance sport apps, we also provide rich mobile services and applications for other sports such as swimming, golf, and tennis.

 Mobile for Swimming

Meet Mobile is an incredible app, the first of its kind, which allows swimmers and fans to view all important event information in real time, from one place, no matter where they are. Users can search for swimmers or meets, flag favorites, see real-time results and scores, view heat sheets, and view timelines. Since its launch in June, we’ve had 60,000 swimmers and fans download the application and we were proud to use it to support the Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha.

 Mobile for Golf

The new Active Network, Golf app is helping course operators get more people out on their greens and promote the sport. This app provides golfers with an easy, quick way to book tee times and receive special discounts or advance tee time privileges. Golfers can check real-time scores and leaderboards, get customized GPS markers for each hole, order food and beverages while on the course, get course updates and news, and share with friends on Facebook. This app has changed the game of golf and proven to drive more tee times for course operators!

 Mobile for Tennis

We worked closely with the US Tennis Association as part of our strategic partnership to build a mobile app for tennis players, coaches and fans. Users can search for tennis leagues or tournaments, register and pay for tournaments, and update match scores. Over 100,000 tennis players, coaches and fans have downloaded the app to date.

And you ain’t seen nothing yet….we are mobilized to make the world a more active place, whether you are a participant, event director, fan or coach.
