February was American Heart Month and an event director we “heart” is Gaby Pozo. Gaby is the national race director for Continental Event and Sports Management, including the Diva Half Marathon Series. With all she has done for the sport of running, and especially for women’s running events, it’s no wonder that she was our Event Director of the Month.
In 1997 Gaby Pozo was part owner of the go-to sports event firm in Florida, featuring triathlons, duathlons and 5Ks. In 2003 they surprised the running world with the ING Miami Marathon®, the first-ever event with a fortune 500 title sponsor. They decided to sell that venture in 2007 and launched Continental Events. Today she directs and manages eight events, six of which are part of the Diva Half Marathon Series. In addition, Gaby is key in special projects on behalf of The Biggest Loser TV show.
Here are 3 reasons why we “heart” Gaby Pozo:
1. She’s the first woman in this industry to serve in a COO role overseeing multiple national events. Gaby Pozo is one of the three founders of the ING Miami Marathon®. After the sale of her business to US Road Sports, she remained with the acquiring company for 2 more years serving as COO for their national operations, which encompassed events such as the ING Miami Marathon®, the Publix Georgia Marathon, the Chicago Half Marathon and the 13.1 Series. She assisted US Road Sports in expanding its ever growing portfolio, streamlining its operations and becoming a national force in the field of participant sports.
2. She has helped grow the sport of running for women. After her husband’s successful launch of the concept of women-only events, Gaby was itching to take the lead on that project. In October 2010, Gaby joined the Continental Team as a volunteer in its very first women’s only event and in January 2011, she became its National Race Director. Gaby has expanded the Diva Half Marathon Series dramatically, encompassing six locations nationwide.
3. She’s a sporty girl’s diva. “Can you imagine how amazing it is to be part of this project? It is every sporty little girl’s dream to play glam, feel strong, and push yourself to your limits. It feels like you own the world…like the time you beat all the boys in school around the track, when we were 8 and stronger than them. I love being a girl and this is the ultimate girl power experience.”
If you asked anyone in the know, Gaby is analytical, creative and visionary—this unique combination of traits has made her a leader in the running industry. Gaby is also a runner herself, claiming it is an endeavor of love and passion. Like most of her athletes, she is a middle of the pack runner with a respectable 4:20 marathon PR, but prefers half marathon distance events. We are very proud to know Gaby and have her as our February Event Director of the Month!
