Event Director of the Month

Great Lakes Endurance
Jeff Crumbaugh

Jeff Crumbaugh

Jeff Crumbaugh founded the Keweenaw Trail Running Festival 10 years ago as an effort to encourage environmental awareness and advocacy via trail running. Since that time, he has added four more events - Navarino Trail Run, Grand Island Trail Marathon, Tahqua Trail Run, and Navarino Eco-Marathon - now all under the umbrella of Great Lakes Endurance.

Crumbaugh and his wife, Lois Bressette, aim to promote ecological ethics in the sport of running through Great Lakes Endurance. Their events have pioneered sustainability practices through providing organic cotton and recycled fiber race shirts, serving only local and organic food, composting all food waste, eliminating paper cups by requiring runners to carry a water bottle, and donating generously to environmental education and land conservancy organizations. With such a commitment to the environment, it’s no wonder the Crumbaugh’s decided to offer event registrations exclusively online through Active.com to eliminate paper waste.

Trail Runner Magazine (Nov 2008) awarded Crumbaugh with the Sprout Award as the Greenest Race Director in North America. The magazine cited the fact that the Keweenaw Trail Running Festival had produced no trash for three years and that the event was instrumental in saving the cherished Mt. Lookout from development. Runner's World (Nov 2008) listed Crumbaugh's Great Lakes Endurance as one of the Top Ten Green Running Events in North America and the Grand Island Trail Marathon was named one of the Top Ten New Marathons in North America by Runner’s World (Jan 2008).

While attracting 1,500 runners to five events last year, Crumbaugh states that a large number of runners is not the intended goal. "Too often the success of an event is measured by the number of runners. We have a different goal; we want to inspire runners to love and respect the environment, while conducting our events in the most ecological way possible."

Among Crumbaugh’s influences are EF Schumacher's Small is Beautiful, Aldo Leopold's essay "The Land Ethic", and Objibwe elder Alex Kakapshe who teaches the importance of adding beauty to the world.

More information on the Great Lake Endurance events and their ecological practices may be found by visiting www.greatlakesendurance.com.
