Promoting the active outdoor lifestyle and sustainable business
Frank Yohannan, Race Director Sea Otter Classic
Frank Yohannan inaugurated the Sea Otter Classic as the Laguna Seca Challenge on April 6 and 7, 1991, in Monterey, California. At that first event, cyclists totaled 350 and spectators another 150. Fast forward to 2009, and the Sea Otter Classic has evolved into a four-day celebration of cycling that welcomes more than 8,000 athletes and 49,000 fans. The event is now the largest cycling festival in North America and Frank claims it's the cycling world's premiere festival.
"One day, I was in a bicycle shop in Monterey and the owner said 'you ought to put on a mountain bike race'," recalls Yohannan. That comment set Frank in motion, and he's hosted the Sea Otter Classic for the past 19 years.
The event is a four-day cycling and outdoor sports extravaganza featuring a full schedule of amateur and pro cycling events, as well as family activities. Athletes participate in both competitive and non-competitive events in various mountain bike and road bike disciplines. The Sea Otter Classic also plays host to one of the largest consumer bike expos in the world and hundreds of professional road and mountain bike athletes. The hub of the event is Sea Otter Village, busy with bike demos, stunt shows, kids' playhouses, plus food and live entertainment.
Frank's hope is that the Sea Otter Classic contributes to making people's lives better through cycling and an active outdoor lifestyle. Keeping an eye toward the future, he strives to minimize the event's environmental impact and to develop programs that inspire youth to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Frank has developed partnerships with several local organizations as well as corporate supporters to run the Sea Otter Classic as a more sustainable, environmentally-responsible event. Examples of his efforts include:
| | |
 | | A new program introduced this year that involved everyone in recycling efforts. Those who threw recyclables in the correct bin (with or without help from volunteers posted nearby) were offered a "ticket" to redeem for prizes at a "Zero Waste Store." "People might think they are doing all they can by having a recycling bin at home, but at events, they just don't make the extra effort," says Frank. |
| | |
 | | Anyone driving to the event in a hybrid or other alternative-fuel vehicle, plus carpools of four or more people, was offered reserved parking near the Sea Otter Village. |
| | |
 | | Why not ride your bike to the venue? The staff at Clif Bar, a corporate sponsor, has ridden to the event for the last three years, once even riding all the way from their Berkeley, Calif. headquarters. |
