While 2008 had its fair share of up's and down's, I hope we can all agree that the Endurance community can chalk up another great year of events and participation. That said, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support of Active and for creating the wonderful outlets that help keep us all on track. 2009 is poised to be an exciting one, as we will be introducing a suite of new services and technology throughout the year. So keep up the good work and stayed tuned for good things to come.

Rules to live by...
Russ Pugh, Owner, Vineman Triathlon

Every great race has a challenging route, great scenery and a race director committed to its success. Russ Pugh, Owner of Vineman Triathlon is one of those great race directors that’s seen many events come and go in his last twenty years of experience. 2009 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Full Vineman Triathlon, making it the oldest independent Ironman distance triathlon held in the continental United States.
"Looking back, now I believe that it was my commitment to not giving up through the early, lean years that made it possible to develop our events into what they are today." Russ reflects.
Over the years Russ has followed several rules that have enabled him to continually grow, and make it to his 20th year. The following are a few rules that Russ has followed through the thick and thin:
Russ' Rules
- Don't spend (or promise to spend) money that you don't have.
- Do something for your event every day - Even if it is as simple as answering your e-mails and phone messages, don't let a day pass without doing something which will make your event better than it was yesterday.
- Treat your event like a business - Incorporate, have an office, maintain a Web site, and most of all make good business decisions for your event based on where your event is today and where you would like it to be in the future.
- Remember that Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was the Ironman - It takes a long-term commitment (a minimum of five years) to develop an event which will sustain itself.
- Don't hesitate to let your event evolve and change over the years - Guide your event in the direction you’d like it to go, but let the market tell you what is needed.
- Surround yourself with talented and energetic people (event staff) who buy into your event promotion philosophy - Trust and empower these people to help your event become better.

"I've often compared developing an event over the long term to raising a child. Each one has a different personality, strengths and weaknesses. By caring for them on an ongoing basis and allowing their strengths to blossom (and helping them overcome their weaknesses), over time they will develop into unique entities which someday will be able to take care you!" |
