A Race Within a Race
Bob Seagren – Long Beach International City Bank Marathon

Bob Seagren

International City Racing was founded in 2001 in an effort to acquire the rights to the foundering Long Beach Marathon. While the event had quite a storied history (the first race having been run in 1982), the event was on the verge of going away. Bob Seagren, the company CEO (who happens to be an Olympic Champion winning the Gold Medal in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in the Pole Vault) helped restore some sense of trust for the event.

The first few years were challenging, but ICR always moved forward with strategic steps to encourage more race and community participation. When the current title sponsor became involved in 2002 (International City Bank), they wanted to encourage some of the key Departments from the City of Long Beach to become involved in the event. Thus was born the Police vs. Fire 5K Challenge.

In its 7th year, the event is subset of the 5K that is hosted as one of the marathon events. The Long Beach Police Department and the Long Beach Fire Department have set up this battle for bragging rights and to raise funds for their team’s charity. Anyone can register for the Police vs. Fire 5K Challenge. A portion of each registration is donated back to the respective charities: the LBPOA Memorial Widows Emergency & Scholarship Trust Fund and the Friends of Long Beach Firefighters. As for competition, the top 10 sworn Police and Firefighters times are counted and the winning team is awarded a perpetual trophy at our Finish Line Festival. “It’s worked out great and is very competitive for the annual bragging rights,” said Seagren. It’s been one of many steps we’ve taken to help us build up the event to the 18,000 to 20,000 participants expected to compete in 2008.”

Just for fun…
In my spare time I hang out with my furry kids (Cosmo & Baron), bike (both mtn & road), hike, snowshoe & ski.
