DMSE has produced more than 750 mass-participatory athletic events throughout the world. Included in that impressive list are 20 Boston Marathons, for which Dave serves as Race Director. In 2005, Dave was inducted into the Running USA Hall of Fame.

As race directors you must be able to do everything from securing city permits to ordering the porta-toilets. Dave will address and help you stay on top of the "Hot Topics" in today's running event management world.

Event Director of the Month

The Portland Marathon - Les Smith

Portland Marathon

Les Smith has been the Event Director of the Portland Marathon for 27 years. Les claims his longevity and the success of the event are the direct result of the 65-member volunteer Event Committee, who each average 17+ years working on the event. During Les' tenure, the Portland Marathon has grown from 400 participants to nearly 10,000.

Twenty-three years ago, Les created what is now a highly recognized three-day Event Director's College. Held during the three days (October 2-4) before the Portland Marathon, this interactive conference has trained event directors and committee members of large and small events from all over the US. The Conference stresses leadership and explores the critical topics that make running and walking events a success.

This year's Conference will stress the basics of what makes an event grow and flourish both for participants and the community. Topics will include how to create a solid event charity program:

  • Sponsorship and revenue-producing ideas
  • Critical medical issues of current interest
  • How to produce a comprehensive economic impact study
  • Ways to create a solid running program for grade-school kids
  • The importance of political networking

"We again will have top experts and experienced event directors to serve on our College's panels. These include Jeff Galloway, Joe Henderson and Congressman Earl Blumenauer, who has run over 25 Portland Marathons. The Conference is a fun get-together of the best and brightest, as well as a terrific venue in which to network," said Smith.

Les also has trademarked the Portland Marathon's "Plug-in" program, which includes making the event MP3-friendly. He also added to the event's long-term green program. The program, which has given a tree to finishers each year since 1993, will see the planting of the 100,000th tree this year.

"The key is picking good leaders and competent workers and trusting them to perform after you make sure they understand how the event goes together. Long ago the military taught me the leadership skills and why delegation is critical."
