Vision 5K

Vision5k.org

Joe Quintanilla, the director of development for the Carroll Center for the Blind and event director for Vision 5K, is the driving force in conceiving the race and making it a success. Joe has been a tireless champion for the Vision 5K since its inception, and he has devoted countless hours organizing the event, promoting the abilities of blind athletes and training sighted runners and walkers for the Blindfold Challenge.

The 2008 Vision 5K raised more than $300,000 to support the five organizations that provide critical services to those with visual impairment:

  • The Carroll Center for the Blind
  • MAB Community Services
  • National Braille Press
  • Perkins School for the Blind
  • New England College of Optometry/New England Eye Institute

Quintanilla is very pleased to have more than 800 runners this year.

"When I thought we should have a race where we could highlight the talents of blind athletes in 2001, I knew we had something special. Being a blind runner myself, I was aware of the need for blind athletes to have competitions and be recognized. It is rare to have a visually impaired division on a registration form, let alone offer prize money. The 5k shows that blind people are just as capable and talented as sighted people if given the opportunity and tools.

"We now have a Blindfold Challenge category, an opportunity for sighted runners to run with a blindfold on. They raise money, and participate in educational training. They walk away understanding that it isn't about what you can't see, but what you can do. I love the VISION 5K, because it gives blind people an opportunity to compete, do something recreational, and find out what they are capable of."

"We are poised to make this event a World Championship race for the Blind and the fundraising potential is immense."
